A longtime physician, Dr. Anne Georgulas treats young patients at an independent pediatric practice in Coppell, Texas. Among Dr. Anne Georgulas’ areas of knowledge is the treatment of blisters.

The causes of blisters vary widely and include sunburns, scalding burns, and friction, such as from an ill-fitting shoe. They may also result from skin conditions like contact dermatitis and impetigo, as well as chickenpox, herpes zoster, and other types of viral infections.

Blisters often go away simply by leaving them alone. One key thing to remember is to avoid puncturing or bursting a blister. Instead, the area around the blister should be cleaned using soap and water, and an ice pack should be applied if discomfort or swelling becomes an issue. Should the blister burst on its own, simply keep the area clean and cover it with a dressing or adhesive bandage. Monitor it closely for signs of infection, including drainage, redness, swelling, pain, and pus formation. Should an infection develop, visit a physician to receive the proper treatment.
